In the Praça de Santa Maria, in front of the church, there is a 15th century pillory, used for the punishment of wrong doers, who were exposed to public shame by being tied there naked. It is decorated at the top with a fishing net, a homage by Queen Leonor, wife of King João II, to the fishermen who recovered the body of her son Afonso. He was killed in a riding accident and the pillory bears the royal coat of arms. This square also has a fine fountain and the portico which served for centuries as the town market
