Lying about 39 km east of Arganil, and deep in the Serra do Açor, Piódao is one of the most attractive villages in Portugal. The village is now almost completely restored, with the houses having their distinctive double schist walls and slate roofs. A peculiarity is that all windows are painted the traditional blue; it is said that the one shop stocked only this colour and Piódao was too isolated in those days for people to buy from elsewhere. The 19th century Igreja Matriz, dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception, is in contrast stark white; it was built by the local population.
