The island of Santa Maria is full of ancient and exotic reminders of nature in its purest form. Dominating the eastern plateau and, when the weather is good, providing excellent panoramic views across the whole island is Pico Alto, with its 590 m Santa Maria’s highest peak. From the top, a panoramic view stretches out over this deeply indented island. A tombstone on its top reminds of the blackest day in the island’s aviation history when a plane crashed against this peak and 200 Italians died in this catastrophe.
