The Museu da Imagem was founded by the City Council in 1999 and is housed in a tower close to the Porta Nova gateway, one of the medieval entrances to the city. Initially intended to save the archive of a photographic store, it now covers the whole visual history of Braga. Its collection is considered one of the most important in Portugal and includes, amongst a full range of exhibits, an archive of about 120,000 glass photo negatives. The Museum has a specialised library and is also used for temporary exhibitions and seminars related to the photographic art form.
