Apart from its role in the production and sale of port wine and its spa (see separate entries), Peso da Régua has many features to interest visitors. Near the village of Poiares, 10 km to the northeast, is the São Leonardo da Galafura viewpoint, described by writer Miguel Torga as geological poetry. At the charming village of Mesão Frio, 13 km to the west, the Manueline church of São Nicolau, features late 16th-century ceiling panels and 8 km to the east are the excavations of a Roman settlement at Canelas. These are only some of the varied attractions in this area.
