The countryside surrounding the town of Alcoutim has spectacular and beautiful scenery, and it is worth driving through it just for the views alone. Dotted amongst the hills are some delightful small towns well worth visiting and Pereiro is one of them. Roman finds in the area show that this part of the Algarve has long been a settlement. Many of the houses still retain the architecture typical of the Algarve uplands. The parish church is small and dates back to the 16th century. It houses an interesting collection of painted retables and some fine statues.
