Standing in front of the Igreja da Graça, in the garden of the Praça 25 de Abril in the centre of town, is the 20 metre high obelisk memorial to the British and Portuguese who lost their lives in the Peninsular Wars. Torres Vedras was closely involved with the Peninsular Wars from 1808 to 1814, in particular through the Lines of Vedras set up north of the town by Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington. In 1810 the lines were instrumental in forcing the French General Masséna to retreat to Santarém and a year later to withdraw to Spain.
