In 1966, the first golf course to be built in the Algarve was the 6,273 metre Penina Championship Course, still considered to be Sir Henry Cotton´s masterpiece. It has hosted the Portuguese Open on several occasions. The course was completely rebuilt in 1995, although it retained most of its original features. It is a reasonably flat parkland, 18 hole, par 73 course, with many bunkers, almost four hundred thousand trees, several lakes, spacious greens and a vast tee area. Facilities include, driving range, three putting greens, pitching area, trolley hire, club hire, pro-shop, restaurants and bars.
