Peniche is an old-style fishing town which is dominated by the industry. The large harbour is protected by two breakwaters and the small Marina provides sheltered moorings for 140 boats up to 15 metres. The harbour is lively; in summer a regular boat service runs from here to the Berlenga Islands and every evening the fishing boats leave harbour to return early in the morning. This is one of Portugal’s most important sources of sardines, crayfish and tuna and the boats also bring home sea bream, sole and halibut. There are many fine restaurants and fishing trips can be booked.
