Peniche was an island until the 16th century when silting up joined it to the mainland. Today it is a peninsula with 15 km of fascinating coastline on the Atlantic. Peniche has many attractions (see separate listed entries) and is famous for its fishing industry and its traditional centuries-old craft of bobbin lace, ‘renda de bilro’, which you can see being made. There are plenty of opportunities for boat cruises and deep sea fishing and you can visit the 16th/17th century Rosary Fountain, which was restored in the 18th century and used to store imported water.
