Now the home of the Municipal Museum, the 16th century Peniche Fortress was used as a prison for many years during its history. At various times it has housed Napoleon’s defeated troops, German prisoners in World War I and, from 1933-1974, political prisoners during the Salazar regime. It became famous in 1960 when a group of political prisoners, including the communist leader Álvaro Cunhal, escaped. The cells have been incorporated into the museum, which has archaeological exhibits and a display of locally hand-crafted lace, a Peniche specialty for centuries. There is also a section devoted to the anti-fascist resistance movement.
