The village of Penha Garcia is located about 27 km northeast of Idahna-a-Velha and is dominated by the castle built by King Sancho I (1185-1211), which was once part of the country’s strategic defensive system. In the parish church there is a memorable ançã stone sculpture of the Virgin Mary breastfeeding her child which dates from 1469. The other attractions of this village include the pelhourinho (pillory), the Penha dam and the natural rock swimming pool. The area is known for its trilobite fossils from millions of years ago, referred to by the locals as ‘painted snakes’.
