Originally erected in the town’s main square, but now located in the Rua 25 de Abril, the Penela Pillory dates back to medieval times and is a Listed Monument. Used for punishment and public humiliation, the pillory has an octagonal column made of pine wood and stands on a three step base. The design is very unusual, with four metal arms in the form of snakes with rings in their mouth. There are also two coats of arms, which are believed to represent the armorial bearings of Penela.
