The original castle was built in 1087 by Count Sesnando the first governor of Coimbra, but what can be seen at present dates from the 14th to 16th centuries. The remains consist of sections of walls and several of the original twelve towers, which existed until the 18th century. Apart from the main gate, there are also two other entrances, the 15th century Town Gate (Porta da Vila), sometimes called the Gate of the Cross, the Traitor’s Gate (Porta da Traição) which, in accordance with Moorish custom still has a double opening.
