The small town of Penedono lies about 16 km northeast of Sernancelhe and its castle is built on rocks in the centre of the town. Known to have existed since the 10th century, it was home to the Coutinho family and is believed to be the birthplace of Álvaro Gonçalves Coutinho, O Magrico (The Paladin). He was immortalized for his bravery and gallantry by Portugal’s national poet Luís Vaz de Camões in his epic poem Os Lusíadas. The current castle dates from the 15th century with fine towers and battlements. There are splendid views from its walls.
