Created in 1971, the Peneda-Gerês National Park is Portugal’s only classified National Park and is located in the northeast of Portugal. It is about 70,290 hectares (270 square miles) in extent, bounded by the Peneda Mountains and the Spanish border in the north and the Gerês Mountains to the south. Amongst its most attractive features are the dams at Alto Rabagão, Paradela, Caniçada, Vilarinho da Furnas and Lindoso and the waterfalls at Caniçada, Vilarinho das Furnas and Portela do Homem. Fauna to be seen include the roe deer (symbol of the park) and the Garrano, a breed of small horse.
