The frontier town of Penamacor lies about 23 km north of Idanha-a-Velha and was fortified in the 12th century by the Knights Templar. The castle remains consist of the walls, the restored Clock Tower (Torre do Relógio), the former town hall, which dates from 1568 and is built over the main gate ( Porta da Vila) and another watch tower. Other attractions include the pillory, the mother church and the 16th century Misericórdia church, with a fine Manueline portal topped by armillary spheres, the emblem of King Manuel I.
