The town of Penafiel, on a hill above the River Sousa, is known as the granite town and is also in the heart of the vinho verde region. Its attractions include the municipal Museum in Rua Conde de Ferreira and the 16th century Renaissance parish church of São Martinho in Rua Direita. There are many Romanesque churches in the surrounding region and these include the 13th century São Miguel in Eja about 16 km south and the 12th/13th century São Pedro at Abragão approximately 13 km southeast. These are in addition to others separately listed.
