Surrounding Pena Palace, the exciting Pena Park is the inspiration of King Fernando II in collaboration with architect Baron Eschwege and engineer Baron Kessler. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1955. Covering some 500 acres, it contains more than 400 species of trees and shrubs, with fountains and springs throughout the park. Cruz Alta (540m), with its 16th century cross, is the highest point and provides a panoramic view which should not be missed. Luxurious villas were built in various parts of the park, and Challet Biester featured in Roman Polanski’s film ‘The Ninth Gate’.
