The Pena Palace is regarded as one of the most fantastic in Europe and a major expression of Romanticism in Portugal. Built in the 1840s on the site of the Pena Cnvent, which was destroyed in the great earthquake of 1755, the rebuilding and expansion preserved the portions that escaped damage. The project was the initiative of Fernando de Saxe Coburg-Gotha who later became King Fernando II. Used as a royal residence until 1910, the interior of the buildings are as remarkable as the exterior; this is one of Portugal’s main sights.
