Next to the Dominican church is the picturesque Largo Santa Clara. This square is surrounded by beautiful houses with elegant iron window grilles. In the middle of the square is a particularly impressive 16th century pelourinho (pillory column). The pillory was a method of chastisement in which the culprit was exposed to public humiliation by being forced to stand and endure punishment. This could range from the throwing of rotten fruit to more serious forms of corporal punishment, such as whipping.
