The 39 km trip southeast of Penela to Pedrogão Grande is well worthwhile making. The heart of the town is the large and attractive Largo da Devesa square with the Calvary and Saint Sebastian chapels nearby. The 12th century mother church, with its 25 metre high tower, was rebuilt in the 16th century and has a stone pillory in the courtyard; the interesting Misericórdia church dates from 1470. A boat trip will take you past the perfectly formed arches of the old Zêzere River bridge and Pedrogão Grande is a good starting point to visit the Cabril and Bouçã Dams.
