Situated on the Estrada da Graça, close to the docks, one finds a rare geological monument, the Pedra Furada (Perforated Rock). It stands 18 metres tall, has a 12 metre base, and is perforated with tubes of sand. Discovered in the early 19th century, and described for the first time in 1837, geologists estimate its age as between 2 and 4 million years. The immediate area has been restored to its original appearance and was inaugurated as one of the sites of the National Museum of Natural History in 2003. There are plenty of local legends about this phenomenon.
