Declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1981, the Paul do Boquilobo Reserve lies approximately 6 km west of Golegă, covering about 1300 acres. The area is an alluvial plain of marshland and local life depends on the Rivers Tejo and Almonda that flow around its borders. There are over 200 species of birds, mainly aquatic, and the largest colony of herons in the Iberian peninsular visits to nest. Prior contact with the head office is advisable, as certain areas may be closed during the nesting season. Guided visits can be organized and there also are pedestrian trails which are signposted.
