The Escoural Archaeological Park is a National Monument. The area was occupied in the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras and there is a prehistoric grotto with vestiges of Paleolithic paintings and engravings. The cave came to light during blasting operations in 1963. Inside were found 12,000 year-old rock drawings and engravings. The small hill covering the grotto includes an open-air rupestrian sanctuary, dating from the late Neolithic era and a fortified settlement from the Copper Age. There is a “tholos” located nearby – a megalithic beehive-shaped tomb with a false dome.
