The church of St John the Baptist, close the Porta da Vila, houses the Parish Museum of Óbidos. One of the town’s oldest churches, it was built in the 14th century by Queen Isabel, wife of King Dinis. Dedicated to St Vincent, it was used as a place of religious instruction for lepers. From 1636 until the banning of religious orders in 1834, it was the Collegiate Church of Saint John the Baptist but thereafter fell into decline until recently restored with the aid of the Town Council. It is now used extensively for temporary exhibitions of religious culture.
