Construction of the parish church (Igreja Matriz) commenced in 1488, but it was only completed sixty years later. A number of architects contributed to its design and, whilst Gothic in style, it also incorporates Renaissance and Manueline features. The church has three naves, a magnificent inlaid ceiling carved in Mudéjar style and a granite pulpit. Above the side doors there are carvings depicting the apostles, the Virgin Mary and figures in daring poses. One man expresses the feeling of the time with his posterior bared towards Spain. There is a small archaeological museum nearby which also houses the tourist office.
