The Parish Church of Vila de São Sebastião was built between the 15th and 16th centuries by the first settlers on the island. The early residents wanted to give thanks to God for finding them such a beautiful spot to put down their roots. Important details of the façade include the Gothic doorways and the Rose window. The dome of the chapel is interesting and unusual. Inside, there are 16th century paintings and important Gothic frescoes which are unique in the Azores.
