The Church of Espírito Santo in Maia was commissioned in the 18th century and has the most original and decorative baroque façade in the Azores. Amongst other features of the richly decorated interior is a statue of Christ carrying the Cross. This statue is used in the Procession of the Stations of the Cross that takes place on the second Sunday in Lent. A former charitable institution, it is one of the most remarkable examples of religious architecture in Maia, Ribeira Grande.
