The church dates back to 1782. Blessed on 15th July 1800 by the Bishop of the Algarve, Dom Francisco Gomes de Avelar, the building replaced the former parish church which collapsed during the earthquake of 1755. It is Neo-classical in style. A magnificent painting by the artist Samora Barros of Albufeira decorates the church’s high altar and serves as a background for the image of Our Lady of the Conception, patron saint of Albufeira. On the archway over the main door is a Cross of Aviz, which is a symbol of the Religious Military Order that administered Albufeira.
