Just slightly north east of Calvário are the ruins of the Monastery of Parchel (also spelt Parxal). The building, which was home to a religious order, was founded in the 17th century and flourished until the great earthquake of 1755. The damage was such that the order decided to relocate rather than rebuild. The remains of murals and decorative polychrome tiles can be seen. There are also sepulchres and monks’ cells in good order. A Roman archaeological site has been established nearby.
