The fascinating Paper Money Museum was the dream of Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda and is owned by the foundation named after him. It was opened in 1996, with a new area displaying the miniature collection opened in 2003. The museum has two permanent exhibitions. The first traces the development of paper money, from its 18th century introduction by Queen Maria I to the present, and exhibits include all the banknotes issued, including those from Portugal’s former colonies. The second presents, in interactive fashion, the relationship between money and transport utilising more than 5,000 miniature cars, boats and trains in motion.
