The Paços do Concelho (The City Hall) is a typical palatial building of the baroque style dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its bell tower is interesting in design and dates from 1724, but the bell is from the 16th century. It was given to the town as a present from the king, Dom João III. The building currently houses the offices of the Municipality. Also gracing the Largo da República is an attractive statue of Saint Michael and an ornate fountain.
