Northeast of Arcos de Valdevez, in the direction of the villages of Ázere and Mezio, you can see the abandoned stone house and tower of Paço de Giela, which is regarded as an outstanding example of a Portuguese medieval residence. The building is thought to date from the early 15th century with later Manueline elements; it has commanding views. A strange feature is that there is no direct access to the rest of the property from the tower in which there are few windows. The type of granite used in construction may, in part, account for its complete state.
