One of the finest examples of Portuguese military architecture, the dominance of the Castelo de Palmela is particularly apparent when floodlit at night. Captured from the Moors in 1147, and again in 1166, by Afonso Henriques, it was handed over to the Knights of the Order of Santiago. King João I ordered the conversion of the castle into a monastery, which became the Order’s headquarters in 1443. It was abandoned in 1834 after the prohibition of religious orders. In 1945 the state restored and converted the buildings into a splendid pousada. The castle also houses the local tourist office.
