The Torre de Menagem of Palmela Castle provides superb views over the whole castle complex, the town and, on fine days, as far as Lisbon and the River Tagus estuary. With this commanding view, one can understand why the Palmela fortress was regarded as one of the most formidable in southern Portugal. The keep dates from the 14th century and it was here in 1484 that Garcia de Meneses, the bishop of Évora, was incarcerated in the keep’s cistern and is presumed to have been poisoned on the orders of King João II, for his involvement in a conspiracy.
