Situated high up and north east of Funchal is the Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro, regarded as one of Madeira’s finest gardens. In 1804 Count Carvalhal engaged a French landscape gardener to lay out the estate; he also built the residence which is now a hotel. In 1885 the Blandy family acquired the property and continued to develop the garden to its present state, which has a most valuable and rare collection of exotic plants, many of which were imported from various parts of the world. There is a Baroque chapel in the garden and a wild ravine known as ‘Inferno’.
