The Captain-General’s Palace was originally a 17th-century convent belonging to the Jesuits. In the wake of their expulsion from Portugal in 1759 and the creation of the position of Captain-General of the Azores in 1766, the building was adapted to serve as his residence. It also served as a royal palace in 1832, during the reign of D. Pedro IV, and in 1901, during the reign of D. Carlos I. As well as functioning as a museum with various examples of 17th and 18th century furniture, statues, paintings and decorative objects, it is also used by the Regional Government of the Azores.
