About 6km south of Monção, the 18th century neo-classical Palaçio de Brejoeira gives a good idea of how the aristocracy lived in Portugal. With its imposing four corner towers, it was originally built for Luís Pereira Velho de Moscoso and took 28 years to complete. The rooms are luxurious with valuable paintings and frescoes and the property has its own chapel. It is still privately owned and its estates now produce prestigious vinho verde wine and brandy. In 1950, the dictatorial António Salazar met here with his Spanish counterpart, General Franco of Spain. Prior arrangements are needed to visit.
