This palace is partially a remnant of a previous palace burnt down in 1384 during the people’s revolt. It now has a 17th century façade, dominated by the architectural style of the Manueline-Moorish period, and the Tower of Five Shields. Previously the palace of the governor of Évora, and used as a royal residence, it was also the home of the humanist D. Francisco de Melo. The first-floor rooms house a collection of manuscripts, family portraits and religious art from the 16th century. The Duke of Bragança, D. Fernando II, was sentenced to death here in 1483.
