The Paço dos Condes de Basto, found several hundred yards to the right beyond the Paço dos Duques de Cadaval, is a primitive Moorish castle and was once residence of the kings of the Alfonsine dynasty. The palace displays features of the Gothic, Manueline, Moorish and Renaissance style of architecture. Apart from its value in its own right as a mediaeval palace, it has an additional claim to historic fame. When the palace was built, the architect incorporated part of the Romanesque cum Visigothic town walls.
