Mangualde, a pretty village about 17 km southeast of Viseu, is notable for the Palace of the Counts of Anadia, considered one of the most beautiful stately homes in the Beira Alta region. Built in 1724 by Simão Paes do Amaral, governor of the district of Viseu, the design is believed to be by Nicolau Nasoni (1691-1773). The palace, with its pink Baroque façade, underwent some alteration in the 18th and 19th centuries and is a magnificent example of sophisticated living. There are beautiful 18th-century tiled panels and many family portraits. The palace is a National Monument and booking is necessary to visit.
