Paderne Castle features on the Portuguese flag. It was once an Arab stronghold and the walls, barbican tower and the main gate remain. Situated just over a mile from Paderne, it stands on a spur of rock above the Quarteira creek. It was inhabited until the 14th century. The thick walls are made of "taipa" (mud mixed with lime and stones), a typical feature of Moorish buildings. Inside are the ruins of the hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Our Lady of the Assumption). Nearby, there is a medieval bridge and a water mill with its sluice.
