Paçô Beach, some 10 km north of Viana do Castelo, is flanked by dunes with a small 18th century fort on the beach. Sheltered naturally, the Montedor hill and lighthouse overlooking the south end, add to its popular attraction. Conditions are good for surfing and diving and fishermen enjoy good line and spear fishing; volleyball is also played. This is an EEC blue flag beach, with life guards on duty in season and facilities for the disabled. The average seawater temperature in summer is 15-16 ºC, parking is available, umbrellas can be hired and there are café, bar and restaurant facilities.
