The medieval town of Ourém lies about 13 km northeast of Fátima and has attractions other than its ruined castle. Count Dom Afonso, when he set up court here in 1422, not only rebuilt the castle but also constructed a palace and the Igreja da Colegiada (Collegiate Church subsequently remodelled in the 18th century), which contains his magnificent tomb. Other features include the statue of Nuno Álvares Pereira and a 15th century fountain and pillory. It is said that the town derived its name from Fátima, a Moorish girl, who fell in love with a knight, converted and changed her name to Oureana.
