The 15th century Ourém Castle dominates the medieval town of Ourém, which is located approximately 13 km northeast of Fátima. The castle was rebuilt and enlarged by the 4th Duke of Ourém, Dom Afonso, a grandson of both King João I and Nuno Álvares Pereira who commanded João I’s forces at the crucial Battle of Aljubarrota (1385). He was also responsible for the reinforced walls which encircle the citadel. The 1755 earthquake and the Napoleonic invasions damaged the castle, but two gates, the Porta da Vila and the Porta de Santarém, survive, together with some towers and the ruins of a secret passage connecting them.
