The 18th century Church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação was built in the Rocaille style, which is characterized by lightness, elegance and an exaggerated use of curving, natural forms in ornamentation. The interior decoration shows this, in particular the altarpieces of the lateral chapels. The church has a fine collection of 18th-century statues, including a statue of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, by Joaquim Machado de Castro one of Portugal’s foremost sculptors (1731-1822). The stained glass windows of the main chapel and the baptistery, installed in the 1940s, are by the Algarvian artist Joaquim Rebocho.
