The present church dates from the 17th century and its façade is distinguished by two baroque belfries. It much larger than the original church, built on the orders of King Ferdinand in 1377 to cater for the number of pilgrims to the Memória Chapel and to guard the statue of the Virgin Mary. Internally, apart from the statue of the Virgin, there is an anonymous painting of the miraculous rescue of Dom Fuas Roupinho (see details under the entry for the Memória Chapel). There are also beautiful 18th century blue and white tiles depicting scenes from the Old Testament.
