The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Loreto (parish church of Our Lady of Loreto) is believed to date back to 1255, when the church was called Saint Maria. It is possible that the foundations are a relic of the period before the region became Christian. The church underwent some reconstruction after an explosion in January 1659. In the great earthquake of 1755 the building suffered major damage, requiring further renovation and restoration. Unfortunately the church has been allowed to deteriorate, but plans are in place to restore the building to its former glory.
