Located on Monte de São Gabriel, on the southeast side of Leiria, is the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação which was built in 1588. The grand staircase dates from the 18th century and was created on the instructions of Bishop Brother Miguel de Bolhões, whose coat of arms is on one of the landings. There are seven arches leading up to the entrance and the central and tallest has a statue of Archangel Gabriel. The church has 17th century multi-coloured tiles depicting scenes from Our Lady of Incarnation’s life and also paintings of miracles attributed to her.
